Our 50 over 50 Project: Meet Tracey - “You have made me realise that, as an older woman, we should be celebrating how we look. Not shrinking into the background, or made to feel less relevant."
What is your name and age? Tell us a bit about you!
My name is Tracey, and I am 64 years old. 65 on Thursday! Eek. I'm a fairly balanced (now) self-employed woman enjoying life in my new home in Lyme Regis, loving my garden and making time to spend with friends. Occasionally I work from home - mostly legal but also as a divorce consultant which uses my family mediation experience.
When did you come in for your 50 over 50 Photoshoot? What made you decide to book?
I came in May. It was partly inspired by Jo asking if I wanted a corporate style photo, and realising that was the last thing I wanted! I have been there, done that, and have a number of the t-shirts! The idea of capturing the essence of a person in a photograph intrigued me. I also recognised it was a great opportunity to get over my silly tendency to avoid indulging myself.
A big part of this experience was about celebrating ageing and showing the world that getting older is nothing to be scared of; that each day has potential to bring adventure!! What would you say is your favourite thing about being the age you are?
I've realised I really can stop being and looking how I think others want me to be. My daily life is not without challenges of course but I'm loving being who I am and sharing with my loved ones and others anything good, funny, entertaining, interesting - even quirky.
Did you enjoy your 50 over 50 photoshoot? Did it empower you to celebrate yourself?
Absolutely! And I felt especially happy that day.
Tell us - what was the moment you saw your photos for the first time like?
I was wrapped in genuine surprise and awe at some of them.
Did you find that your discovery calls helped you prepare for your day with us?
Yes, sort of, and mainly because I was reassured that the people involved were genuine and natural. I nearly put 'normal' but I suppose that was part of it too, as far as one can tell that on a call!
What stood out or surprised you about this experience?
There was a lovely positive energy about the whole experience and a flow . I went from having some reservations to embracing wholesale the whole experience.
What was your favourite part of the experience?
The shoot itself, I think, but the big reveal of all the photographs was also amazing. I could go on!
How does your artwork make you feel?
I have one photograph so far which I like very much but it’s more about how my two children responded that made me feel quite emotional. They helped me see that I had done a good thing. My son particularly was very wordy and said he loved it and that he'd like a copy.
Do you have any last messages you’d like to add?
The entire project is rooted in such a good and important place for women over 50. This is one reason I immediately wanted my Divine Diva book club friends to take part. You have made me realise, as an older woman, that we should be celebrating how we look and, on the good days, how we feel. Not shrinking into the background, or made to feel less relevant. On the contrary, we are to be celebrated. So a huge thank you and I look forward to meeting the team again sometime!
